Booking your family photo session is exciting. You start planning outfits, thinking about locations, maybe even scheduling hair and makeup. All of that matters.

But there is one thing that makes the biggest difference in how your session feels and how your photos turn out.

Preparing your kids.

After 9 years as a North Texas family photographer, 13 years in early childhood education, and raising two kids of my own, I can tell you this with full confidence. When children feel prepared, comfortable, and safe, everything flows better.

Here are the simple things that truly help your family photo session go smoothly.

1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time

Kids thrive when they know what to expect.

Start mentioning your upcoming family photos a few days in advance. Keep it light. Talk about it like something fun you are doing together. Explain that you will be meeting up with a photographer who is there to capture your family laughing, playing, and spending time together.

For younger kids, describe it like a little adventure at the park. For older kids or teens, gently explain that their cooperation helps everything move quickly so everyone can get back to relaxing.

The more normal and positive you make it sound, the more relaxed they will feel.

2. Choose Comfortable Clothing

Yes, we want your family to look amazing. But comfort always comes first.

Scratchy fabric, stiff collars, tight shoes, or too many layers can turn even the happiest child into someone who is over it before we even start.

When planning outfits for your North Texas family photo session, think breathable fabrics, proper fit, and weather appropriate layers. If your child can move, run, and sit comfortably, you will see it in the photos.

Relaxed kids create natural smiles.

3. Pack a Small Prep Bag

A little preparation goes a long way.

I always suggest bringing:

Water

Simple snacks

Baby wipes

Bug spray

Backup shoes

An extra outfit for little ones

Most family sessions happen during golden hour in the late afternoon or evening. That can fall right around dinner time. Make sure your kids have eaten beforehand. A well fed child is a much happier child.

4. Try to Avoid Car Naps

If possible, avoid letting younger kids fall asleep in the car on the way to your session.

Waking up groggy and being expected to jump straight into photos can feel overwhelming for them. We want them arriving alert and ready to explore.

If a nap does happen, give them a few extra minutes to fully wake up before we start.

5. Let Go of Perfection

This one matters most.

Family photos are not about perfectly posed, silent, hands in pockets children. The magic is in the in between moments. The giggles. The wild hugs. The way your little one grabs your hand without thinking.

When kids feel pressure to be perfectly behaved, tension shows up quickly. Instead, loosen the rules just a little for the day. Let them explore. Let them laugh loudly. Let them be themselves within reason.

As a family photographer serving Anna, McKinney, Frisco, Plano, and surrounding North Texas areas, my sessions are built around patience, flexibility, and connection. I meet your kids exactly where they are.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is real.
